We’ll get any relevant overseas grosses for Luca tomorrow, but the film earned around $26,000 on Friday for a likely $80,000 “weekend gross.” Even then, the per-theater-average is (understandably, considering the Disney+ variable) well below Disney’s prior glories. It’s a Disney+ exclusive in North America and all other participating markets. Likewise, Pixar’s latest flick, about two young sea creatures who form a friendship while hiding out in an Italian fishing village, will only play theatrically at the El Capitan for one week. In what I’d argue qualifies as a cruel joke, Walt Disney’s Luca has the year’s biggest per-theater average and the largest per-theater average for any theatrical release since Adam Sandler’s Uncut Gems earned $537,242 in five theaters in December of 2019. Alas, minutes into his holiday, violence ensues as Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek, the 'hitmans wife' of the title) snatches Bryce off a poolside chair and thrusts him into a globe-trotting adventure. They must put their differences aside and work together to make it to the trial on time. “Luca” is directed by Enrico Casarosa (“La Luna”) and produced by Andrea Warren (“Lava,” “Cars 3”). The world top bodyguard gets a new client, a hit man who must testify at the International Court of Justice. But their fun is threatened by a secret: they are sea monsters from another world. Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Disney and Pixar’s “Luca” is a coming-of-age story about a boy and his newfound best friend experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides.
